I would be interested if anyone can recall details of the radar school to which we had to march every morning, particularly the name of the rather eccentric boffin-like instructor who took the classes.

Alan, There is a whole chapter on No. 9 RS in my book "RAF Yatesbury The History". Might have the information you seek. Details here on the site. Phil

Of the civilian staff at AGRS our instructor (1953-54) could have been described as 'boffin-like'. He had long hair, wore an overcoat in class, chain smoked and he was an ace instructor. His name was O'Connor (or maybe O'Connell).

Our class,ARF 131, had a civillian instructor for the techniques phase, who also worked as a barman in the Lansdown in Calne. I forget his name, but this bloke was a great instructor. He also had a fund of knowlege of early radar systems. He could,in his role of barman, create one of those stripey drinks that were probably spectacularly toxic. Whatever became of Shirley, the WAAF in our class? Posted back to Horsham St Faith, and that was the last I heard of her.

And another thing, what became of the film 'Radar School' produced about 1952(?). I saw it on the screen in Leeming ground school during the so called night shift. Skive skills refined!

Gary Peach CMS 111 1954/5 If anyone has any memory I also would like to discover the name of a civvy instructor at AGRES. He always wore a smart blazzer with embroidered pocket ; he was the WOP on Marconi's Yacht in Sydney harbour for the first SW communication in one hop from the UK to Australia.
